From Nowhere to Nowhere

"From Nowhere to Nowhere" is a video project exploring the dislocated nostalgia of Sam, a Chinese man longing for New York—a place he has never visited. The video captures Sam’s virtual journey through New York, blending scenes from Google Maps and found footage. A voice-over narrates his imagined “memories” and emotional connection to the city. Using 16mm black-and-white film and multiple exposures, the video creates an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and unsettling.

For Sam, New York is a distant wonderland, an unseen hometown. Raised in a post-colonial environment, I share Sam's liminal feeling of being simultaneously present and absent, and my work delves into cultural identity and post-colonial sentiment. "From Nowhere to Nowhere" explores dislocated nostalgia, where longing is disconnected from personal memory, forming a gap between oneself and imagination.
